Reading comprehension. Text taken from an authentic resource, with difficult vocabulary. One extension exercises. For A Level

A one page worksheet where students are asked to spot and correct common grammmatical errors. This activity allows students to reflect on grammar and content acquisition for Act 1 and Act 2 of La Casa via a student’s blog. An extension activity is suggested: students could create their own blog and post their paragraph. I have included the answers and a second set of answers with links to key revision points for each paragraph. The original source is from colby.edu, and it has been adapted.

This is a friendly adaptation (jargon free) of the speaking mark scheme for a card. I have introduced it to students to:1) become more aware of what they are marked for; 2) to ease peer marking; 3) to reflect on their own performance and learning. It has been successfully tested with two of my classes, and it was very welcome by the students.

A simple classroom activity that can be done at the beginning of the course in GCSE or AL1, to revise the present tense. Play the PPP (timed) and make your students write the correct verb. For more able students, I make them write a sentence using topic-specific vocabulary. Starter activity for a lesson on the rights of the LGBT+ community. Students watch a video and mark down the sentences they do not hear or that are false. This is followed by a short introductory debate, with three graded questions and some content suggestions to guide the students through the conversation.

This is an article taken from The Guardian newspaper where two young people are interviewed on the subject. There are four exercises to check general comprehension and answers. The format of the exercises is that of the new A Level exams (AQA), for example, summarising. The reading could be followed by students writing or voicing their own opinions on the subject. I have recently created other useful resources for the new specification. Please see below.

This is a list of statements on the topic of Law and Order. Cut them individually and place in an envelope. Students take it in turns to argue for or against the statement.

This is a listening/reading activity where students watch a cutting-edge insightful video on young people who have left Spain due to unemployment. Students work on to the transcript to answer questions INTERPRETING what they have seen/heard. It helps students to gain cultural depth, as well as develop their analytical skills. I used it as an introduction to the topic, and students worked in pairs. There is also a website with the same title which I found really interesting. Good for extension reading after the exercise. Two versions of the exercise for differentiation, together with transcript. Also, an extension reading at the end (quality not the best, apologies).

Presentation that gets students talking about the art of Pablo Picasso.

Reading activity, where students have to recreate a table consisting of symbols (animals, people or objects) identified in the painting, their description, and what they might represent / how they have been interpreted.Table can be cut in pieces and students glue to piece of paper - makes it more fun.

Free writing activity to practise the third type of conditional sentence.
